1000mm Retaining wall to hold back a raised pond
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.56 PM
Please can someone advise as to whether I need to involve a structural engineer to construct a 1000mm high (only need 900mm above ground) retaining wall along one side of a raised natural swimming pond? This is a DIY project and was hoping to avoid additional fees for such a report. From what I have learned so far, I was thinking of a foundation 600mm wide and 300mm deep reinforced with 10inch rebar and then using hollow blocks for the wall also reinforced with the same rebar and filled with c30 concrete. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you

Hi no need for a structural engineer that will be plenty strong enough just pack a nice lean mix inside those hollows 👍

From my experience 900mm wall for water will have to be stronger than a wall for soil. There will be a continuous pressure from the inside. This depend a lot of the length of the wall if it is only 2-3 metres long it should be alright with hollow blocks but leave starter bars from the foundation to connect with the reinforced bars from the blocks and use wet concrete. If the wall is longer, my advice is an RC Wall in L shape

to what you have said so what thats more than sufficient, however what i recommend is when you lay the footings leave the concrete about an hour, and then set your blocks into the concrete about 3-4 inches deep and then put your reed bar in every other block just one hole in each block, depending on the length return the corners as it will make the wall sronger, hope this helps.
