Electric shower is tripping circuit breaker in consumer unit after every shower.

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.56 PM

I have a 10.8kw Mira Vie shower. There is a 45A trip in consumer unit and an RCD in hotpress. The shower works fine and is switched off by the button on the shower unit. Then the circuit breaker trips. I have noticed that the RCD box is hot and the first 10 cm of the cable from the RCD to the shower unit is also hot. The new circuit for this shower (which is above the bath) was installed by a qualified electrician about 6 years ago and this problem has only recently developed. What could be the cause of this problem?

Sounds like you need an electrician to test this. Could be a loose or high resistance termination, the cable and method of installation may not be suited to the rating of the protective device. Switch off trips normally are caused by a delay between the line and neutral disconnect causing an imbalance and a trip. Either way as you are saying that the rcd housing and associated cable are “hot” I would urge you to have it tested without delay. Check the certificate that was issued which will tell you cable size that was installed. It should be 10 mm at a minimum

Loose connection or shower drawing too much current.

The cable size and circuit protective device may not be suitable for 11kw exisiting electric shower device. Maybe the electric shower has been changed and the new one is much more powerful! If the electric shower hasn't been changed then the calculations might have been compromised. You need a registered competent electrician to investigate.
