We have just moved into a house with a brand new oil boiler

We have just moved into a house with a brand new oil boiler. We were nearly out of oil, and not knowing much about oil boilers we thought it best to turn off the timer and turn the thermosat off so that the boiler wouldn't come on, just until we have oil delivered. But obviously in doing this we had no hot water. We then discovered that there was an immersion heater so we switched that on only to find after a couple of days our radiators came on full. Can anyone explain why our radiators randomly came on when we had switched the heating off by the timer?"

Sounds like frost protection, if the temperature drops below a certain temperature the heating system will protect itself and turn on, or you haven’t full isolated/disabled the heating system controls and it’s working on the programmer/timer or stat
