My house has roof spread. Which profession can add extra timber props to my purlins to spread load?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.38 PM

Hi, My house has 2 roofs; the main roof and the rear outrigger. The rear outrigger has a diagonal crack at the back of my house starting from the roof towards a rear window. A structural engineer came to have a look as diagnosed the cause as 'clear signs of roof spread'. This is being caused by the outrigger purlin only being supported by a single timber prop. It shows clear signs of bowing and the crack at the back is in direct correlation to where the purlin meets the rear outrigger My main roof purlins are also bowing. The engineer has instructed that I get an extra 12 timber props added into my roof; 6 in the main roof and 6 in the rear outrigger. Is this a job that a roofer can do or do I need a builder or some other profession? Not sure whom to approach and what kind of costs to expect? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

roofer with joinery experience, a joiner who has roof work experience, builder, who has multi skills. I am sure your engineers report will say what & where they want the supports then it just a case of how easy the access is what materials are required & the length of time required to complete the job because it is structural you may also require building control to sign of the job. good luck Alex

Hi I would call a builder for the job as there’s a couple of aspects to the job probably involving multiple tradesmen and any decent building company will be more than capable of doing the work
