Gas Works

Want to install a gas fire in Livingroom but only supply is in the garage.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.38 PM

We have a really tricky situation where we want to install a gas fire in the Livingroom but the supply is in the garage where the boiler is located, which is at the opposite end of the house. It should be easy enough to run the pipe from next to the boiler, all the way across the ‘double garage’ and through the wall into the first room. It then needs to run through the first room, cross the hallway, into the next room to the outside wall and then turn 90 to run into the Livingroom which will bring it along the outside wall to where the fireplace will be. The floor is suspended but there are a lot of sub walls which seems to be putting off any plumber we have had to look at it. The main issue appears to be crossing the hallway as there is a sub wall under either side of the hallway. Also sub walls that run across the halfway point in each room. I’m guessing that regs prevent a gas pipe from being drilled through a sub-wall? The last gas engineer was suggesting having to go up and over each sub wall which would add more bends. Plus the solum space is not level and although it’s fine at the start of the job, it gets tighter the closer to the Livingroom you go. I should also add that we had hatches cut in the floor on each side of every room affected bar the Livingroom itself.

It shouldn't be a problem at all as everything is possible at a cost. Increase in difficulty has and increase of cost. Many sub or dwarf walls have gaps for plumbers/ electricians to crawl through. They can even make their own openings aslong as structure is not effected and put proper support in but it will cost. If you're not willing to pay the cost of it getting done correctly without cutting corners, then I suggest you dont get the fire put in.

find a shorter and easier route with using as less bends as possible to achieve a maximum 1 mbar drop on gas meter and fire point also the longer the run the more chance u will need to use larger size copper pipes to achieve the gas rate for gas fire depends on the kw output.

The answer given is feasible but why not channel the gas pipe from the boiler around the outside ( if a continuous wall) of the house then through the wall of the room where the fire will be placed. Much easier and cheaper option

An honest answer, but ive never had a job in 49 years where I’ve been unable to get a gas supply to a certain point.
