Electrical

Smart meter installation

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.38 PM

Hi, So basically I've just had a look under the staircase to see what the gas meter and smart meter looks like. Upon inspecting I've noticed that gas meter has earthbonding. But the electric smart meter has no earth bonding. More importantly no isolation switch for safety reasons. Firstly can I ask who is responsible for this. Should this be the actual energy provider. When I switched over to firstly utility few years back they should have done this as part of the service in one go. What the best way to rectify this scenario.. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance 👍 Ali

Your smart meter does not require earth bonding but your gas meter does. In regards to an isolator: You can have one fitted by your DNO (Western power, SSE, UK Power Networks etc) and sometimes by your electricity supplier but they will likely charge you to install it. Responsibility: The DNO owns and is responsible for the incoming cable and Service Head. It contains a fuse,.. normally 100A though this may vary. The Meter is owned by whoever you pay your electricity bills with and they are responsible for it and the cables that supply it. You are responsible for the actual meter box, the cables from the meter and your consumer unit. If you did get an isolator fitted, it would be fitted between the meter and your consumer unit. Hope that helps.

An electric meter requires no earth bonding. Usually earth bonding is required to gas, water, and or oil pipes in a domestic property. Just a note.... the incoming service head and meter are not your property, you are responsible from the consumer unit onwards.

What you have found under your stairs is perfectly normal and acceptable. No need to do anything.

Equipotential bonding (earth bonding) is required on extraneous metal work with in your property most commonly has and water incoming supplies, the electric meter doesn't require an earth connection as they're a double insulated unit. As for the main switch these are not mandatory as your consumer unit/s have main isolation inside them, a main switch between your meter and consumer unit is mainly for maintenance purposes and your energy provider can supply one usually at your expense.

Your DNO smart meter doesn't require earthing bonding, some DNO providers do occasionally install an isolation switch when installing their equipment. You would need to contact your electrical provider to enquire if they will install the required isolator switch, alternatively, contact your local registered electrician who can take a look & advise you accordingly.

Hi Ali, Your situation is completely normal and acceptable. Unfortunately even in this day and age a-lot of DNO meter installers will not fit an isolator which can make an electricians life harder when changing consumer units. No need to worry though! Zeb
