Boiler losing pressure

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.38 PM

Hi, Our 18 year old condensing-combi boiler (Worchester-Bosche) has been losing pressure past 12 months and needing topped up every 2 weeks or so. Engineer has checked heat exchanger, renewed expansion tank and can't see any obvious leaks at boiler or on floors/ceilings. We are thinking of getting a new boiler but are worried to spend £ on new one if there is leak. Not sure what to do. Any advice please....??

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If it’s loosing pressure over a period of 2 weeks i would think you may have a very small leak if all is well with the boiler components listed an that a good quality leak sealer may do the trick before going down the route of boiler replacement

You could drain down the heating and put a small loop in from flow to return, fill it back up to pressure and leave it for 2 weeks and monitor the pressure. If this stays the same you know there is no leak at the boiler, maybe try this when the weather is better and your not wanting the heating on.

I would check that the PRV valve is not letting water from system to external point- normally a 15mm copper pipe. Also many sealed systems like combis don’t have a large enough expansion vessel as ones supplied with boiler aren’t large enough and need sizing to system!

Possibly there could be a hairline crack on the heat exchanger and may be loosing water down the condensate pipe. This has been known on the CDI range before.
