Can you take up and put back down Amtico wood-effect flooring?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.54 PM
We have Amtico wood-effect flooring in our hallway. If we need to go under the floorboards, is it possible to take up and re-lay the Amtico?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi There,
Lifting any tiled full stick vinyl product can be difficult, to lift tiles you need to apply a gentle heat over required tile one by one needing lifted, this softens adhesive slightly. Start to lift tile still using heat from heat gun or preferably a hair drier as heat gun can cause damage, its preferably better to lift Amtico from edge rather than middle of floor and better working from a corner . Lift enough area required, cut through subfloor being plywood, if you have chipboard flooring you will only have to cut 6mm of plywood, if floorboards you will have to cut through 9mm. The best tool for job is Exacto tool which cuts exact depth required. Be careful to uplift ply gently try not to break edges and lift in one solid piece using something to lever up plywood causing nails or staples to release from chipboard.
REPLACING SUBFLOOR & AMTICO.
Replace plywood lifted previous. use ringnails or staples to fasten down removed plywood, once secure at centres, a gentle rub to the edges to ensure flat as possible, then apply F500 FBALL Skim coat to kill old adhesive residue & level joints ready for new Amtico. Once F500 is dried a light sand over applied skim coat may be required, apply adhesive from supplier being pressure sensitive or Amtico SF acrylic, fit new Amtico from supplier, sadly you cannot use old Amtico as will be miss shaped due to uplifting and never goes back down again.
You generally find a poor fitter makes floor easy to uplift, a good fitter makes floor uplift hard.
I hope this helps

Hi There, this can be done but is very hard, as you know when you were sold the amtico, the subfloor is the key to a good job.I take that the floor would have had 6mm ply secured first then would you hapen to know if its was pressure sensative or acrylic glue used? the tiles would have to be cleaned of all adhesive and then assesed if it could be used again, I have done this a few times with vareying results. it really depends on the floor and glue.
