Can you tell me what type of wall this is and what fixings are required

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.39 PM

Dear experts I'm looking to hang a children's bookshelf on an internal wall in a house we've not long moved into. It would weigh up to 26kg if full of books and could end up having my child hanging off of it! I need some advice on what the best fixings would be. There are 4x fixing slots on the back of the shelf which take countersunk screws. The first issue is I'm not sure what the wall is made of. I assumed it was plasterboard and bought some heavy duty plasterboard fixings However after drilling a 10mm hole it seems clear that its not plaster and these fixings are not suitable. I think it looks to be plywood?! If this is right what kind of fixings would I need? And is there an easy way to patch this hole up?! Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

hi it may be possible that you have ww2 style wooden slat walls but generally for hollow walls i would use spring toggle fixings or hollow wall anchors as they will spread the load across the wall making it a lot stronger. and should be suitable for a book shelf of that size and weight. i can't imagine a wall being made of plywood as it is nit cost effective really. if you google internal wall types UK it will give you a lot of answers. as well as type of fixings suitable for your walls

Hi, You don’t say how large the bookcase is, but the total weight brong 26kgs. Only a secure fixing into build structure or solid timbers would be safe, especially in a child’s room. Regardless of the “ tefal”promises on the packages, It is not worth the risk. It may be that you need to secure a batten across the wall uprights or a backing board of ply and then secure to this. Better still, floor stand it and secure to the wall for extra safety.

Depending on the age of the house, you may have OSB or insulation board or plaster and lath . All are hollow and a toggle bolt solution is the best bet. However, if you have IKEA, floating shelves with concealed brackets, you need to rethink the 26kg or they will fall down!

There are several fixings for hollow walls .gripit fixings, toggle bolt fixing and geefix fixings are all capable of holding much more weight than 26kg. As it’s in a child’s room I would suggest you employ a good handyman to do this if you are not 100% sure of your own capabilities
