Bathroom Fitting

New bathroom floor build up to finished tiles

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.39 PM

Hi folks. My DIY bathroom re-fit so far has involved replacing the rotting 4 x2 timber joists in the sub-floor, over a newly poured concrete slab and DPM. Insultation between joists. 18mm ply on top for the new structural floor. Building control content with the structure, insulation, ventilation. My question is whether the next layers sound right to you. I plan to bed 6mm backer board onto the plywood with a flexible adhesive, then an electric UFH heating mat, then the tiler will tile over all that with the finished floor. Does that sound right? I'm a bit stuck on whether a Ditra Mat or similar is needed, and if so, where?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, 18mm ply with a 6mm backer board/insulation board is a very good system. i sometimes lay the electric mat then cover with self leveller. makes the tilers job a lot easier. you shouldn't need ditra mat on a sub base over concrete.

Usually I just put ditra ( or durabase)with mapei white on top of the floor so I don’t raise it too much . There is a special matting to put the wires and self level on top. If you put the baker boor will raise the floor too much with the rest of the house. It is not bad but I don’t see the necessity.

Previous answer from Roserefurbishments good, ply floor, but if you're going to lay underfloor heating an insulation backer board would be the better choice, same function as backer board but foiled and insulated so the heat is directed back into your room, still 6mm, same installation process, topps tiles sell it , great deal more efficient than standard backer board. Matting not needed as same function as backer board.
