Damp Proofing

Stone Wall uncovering in a old cottage

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.39 PM

Hello, I don’t actually know if my question comes under damp proofing but anyway.. I live in a cottage which is around 300 years old. I would like to take the plaster board off a full living room wall to undercover the original stone wall. I made a small hole to see how it looked. It looks as though the stone has been brushed with some sort of grey material only slightly though as I can see still slightly see the stone. I asked a friend and he thinks the material has been brushed over to prevent damp and I should not take it off. But I really have my heart set on having this stone wall uncovered. Would the wall become damp if I scrubbed the material off? I don’t even know where to start? I’d be so grateful if anybody had uncovered a stone wall before how your treat it from becoming damp etc?? Thank you 😊

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Megan, The best thing you can do is take all the plasterboard off and remove all the tanking slurry, as this will cause problems in the future. The grey coating you describe will be made up of cement and SBR, this will be trapping any moisture that is in the building. Once the slurry is removed there is a strong possibility that the stone will need pointing, the most important thing to remember with old stone walls is there isn’t a cavity, and will need a hot lime mortar, this will allow the walls to control any moisture in the building.

Just make sure the external part of this wall has not been rendered or repointed with a Portland cement or all your inside work will be in vane as this will stop it doing its job & create dampness Good luck Alex

Take the material off. All mass masonry walls need to breath. And exposing it and repointing in a lime mortar is the best thing you could do.
