Replacing bulb holder on vintage lamp
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.38 PM
I've a Mac Lamp, approx 50 years old. The switch spring has finally disintegrated so I need to replace the bulb holder, however on unscrewing the original fitting I've found that both the neutral and live wires are housed in brown casing - I've no idea which is which. Is there any way to determine which of the wires is live? Or is there a service near me that could replace the bulb holder? Thanks

You need a cheap multimeter that will measure resistance (ohms). Use this to connect between a wire at the bulb holder and the connection in the plug. This will tell you if the connection is continuous and therefore the same wire. You can test the viabilty of household fuses with it as well. It doesn't matter on a bayonet bulb anyway. If its an Edison screw then the neutral should be on the thread the live on the centre pin.

Any electrician would be able to test the wiring and tell you which cable is live (line) and which one is neutral.
As far as replacing any of the parts is concerned then they may be able to help with that too.
