Wooden structure in eaves: is it load bearing or supporting roof beams?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.38 PM

I have recently moved into a flat in Hackney East London in the top floor of a converted house. One of the bedrooms contains a wooden structure in the eaves that protrudes from the floor and is attached to a wooden beam beneath a velux window. I want to remove the structure so I can add built-in storage to the eaves. I need to know if the structure is load bearing, or supports a beam in the roof. Who can I contact to provide an assessment of the structure before it is removed?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I believe that is a load bearing wall you are describing, you can put a little door in the wall to access the eave area. You would need to contact a structural engineer to see if you can take the wall out and or if any modifications are needed. Hope this helps, Regards Frankie BT Roofing Services

It sounds like a purlin which suppoerts the roof. You cant remove it without holding up the roof. Contact an engineer.
