UPVC Gearbox / Lock mech stuck in the door. Trying to replace.

Anonymous user 05/10/2026 - 8.04 AM

Hi, any advice would be much appreciated. I've removed all the screws along the metal strip on the door (leaving the x3 torque screws) but the actual lock element won't come out. Any videos you watch on this it seems to come free very easily. I've read that some are secured with rivets but I can't tell if this is the case with mine (T&T branded if helps). I wonder if anyone had any good tips for wiggling it free? I'm conscience of using excessive force and have tried inserting the spindle and pulling towards me from both sides with the door open but with no joy. Thanks in advance UPDATE: Thanks to those who have replied, appreciate you taking the time to do so. Having read the responses I'm just updating the question as looking at my original post it wasn't particularly clear. So I've completely removed both the euro cylinder lock and handle plates on both sides (including spindle) and taken out all the screws (bar the torque screws) along the multipoint mechanism strip where the mushroom cams etc are. The problem is that when I gently pull the strip away the lock centre case gearbox doesn't budge and come away with it as it should. Not sure if it is riveted or just very tight so reluctant to force it. Again, thanks in advance.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Sometimes the mechanism is quite tight when installed which can cause the issue you describe. As long as the handle, spindle and euro-cylinder are removed there should be nothing holding the mechanism so my advice would be to either use a small bar through the euro-cylinder or spindle aperture and pull towards the door edge (a screwdriver should be OK) or use the spindle to pull the gearbox. Once it starts to move it will get easier and then once the mech is proud of the door, using a small flat head to can lever above and below the gearbox. Of course, you must get the exact right mechanism to replace and cut it to length so using an accredited locksmith really is your best bet.

I recommend you get a locksmith who knows what they are doing. Your security is not something to be taken lightly. Use a screwdriver behind the gearbox and force it out, maybe something broke in gearbox which makes it difficult to remove from door. See where it sticks and attack from euro, spindle holes in upvc. Quite a common problem. Good luck

Hi, Are you removing the lock cylinder from the handle plate of the pins to the edge of the door? If it’s the pins, this is attached via screws into the side of the door. If it’s the euro cylinder in the handle plate, then once you have all the screws out (1x very long screw and 2x shorter screws) the cylinder should quite loose, then turn the key or thumb turn in the cylinder. This rotates a metal section inside to allow the cylinder to slide out of the door. Hope that helps

sounds like it's real tight in the door frame there are moving parts on the gearbox that slightly jut out of the body that will catch on the metal reinforcing I have removed them t&t mechs in the past and they are poorly fitted they're a turkish make and you won't be able to find a replacement gearbox I tried all my trade suppliers with no joy

If you have removed the euro cylinder barrel, both handles and all fittings to hold the lock in place, it is just tight fitting. It needs manipulation to remove. Gently ease it out evenly with a bar moving from top to bottom meeting at the gearbox. (Handle)
