EICR two years ago was ok but now told I need a rewire?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.18 PM

Two years ago I had my electrics checked as I was concerned about some light switches on a house I had just bought. The report was good apart from a couple of points which were easily fixed. I have just the same electrician in to check why some lights have started playing up (flickering and flashing etc) and has just called to say that the wiring is a mess and junction boxes everywhere. That basically it would be best to get a full rewire than have to pull up everything to find the source of the loose connection. My question is if my wiring was this bad why did it not come up in the report?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Wiring under floors aren’t checked when doing an EICR. If he has since tried to find your fault and lifted floors, exposed a load of joint boxes that make the wiring look awful, then perhaps this is why he has given you the response you’ve received. However, he should be able to locate the source of your fault. When we do EICR’s, we carry out certain tests but these only take us so far, and may not reveal how the wiring might be in places that are not accessible to us. Regards, Carl.

This sounds like a common excuse for him to say ‘ I can’t find the fault and I have not got a clue what I’m doing’ so, a rewire is a fits all type of excuse. I would recommend getting someone else in.

Guy doesn't have any skill if he can't pin point a loose connection in a joint box. Get someone else to look at it.

As Pro Electrical Services says, I would recommend you get another electrician in for a second opinion.
