Is it safe to turn on my fireplace ?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.18 PM
I have recently purchased a flat in London in a 1860 building comprising of 14 flats over 4 floors. My flat is located on the 2nd floor. I have no knowledge about Fireplaces and would like to know what checks I need to perform to know if it is safe to turn on this fireplace. See attached. When i push the opening in back position to open so the path to chinmey is open, i can feel light air. I believe there is a leaver inside too but haven't examined carefully. Would appreciate any advice.

I would recommend you speak to engineer gas/electric before so, sounds like someone would have to take a look themselves to be sure.

The chimney should be swept this will make sure it is free from blockages and also either a cctv inspection or integrity test undertaken to evaluate the condition of the flue prior to using it

Given the age of the building, I would suggest it will need a professional chimney sweep to carry out a sweep, the result of this will determine the need for the either a CCTV inspection or a pressure test as it has a flue going through different properties.
