Roofing

Timber on a roof

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.41 PM

I have had an estimate for renewing my roof, including timbers. I have also had another roofer looking at the roof, who advises me that my timbers are OK but has given me an estimate that includes renewing the battens - are battens the same as timbers? I am confused - please help.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Battens are made from timber (usually) They sit on Rafters and these too are timber (usually) See page 12 http://www.ribaproductselector.com/Docs/3/23663/external/COL123663.pdf

Replacing roof battens is OK, also new vaporising membrane or felt crucial to longevity of new roof cowering and future health of timbers. Old timbers often Canadian pine full of raisin and better quality then new . Timbers are considered as structural members of roof , and battens only support roof tiles, slates, shingles etc..
