Bathroom Fitting

When is too many delays and excuses enough?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.35 PM

We are in the process of having our bathroom redone. This has meant pulling out all the old sanitary wear, removing old tiles, retiling and installing a freestanding bath. The bathroom fitter originally quoted the job would take 5 - 7 days. The first two days he didn't show up, he gave his excuses but I think he was running behind on another job. The following 3 days he told us he would start at 8am but didn't actually get on site until 9 - 10.30am. Eventually he advised he'd need to work Saturday and Sunday to keep to schedule. We agreed, he turned up (late again) on Saturday but didn't turn up on Sunday. Now he is advising someone he worked with needs to have a covid test and he himself feels ill so he may not be able to finish the job until the new year (3 weeks from now). Our bathroom is half tiled, unusable, and two other rooms need plaster work retouched because of the nail pops the work has caused. Is this normal practice to leave a job without finding someone to finish the job? What can I do? What are my rights (if any?) The project was running 3 or 4 days behind even without Covid being thrown into the mix and now I'll be without a working bathroom for 3 weeks... Luckily we have another. Any advice or best practice would be appreciated!!

Be weary of anyone saying they will complete a full install in 5-7 days!!! Quality work takes time. I've been in this business for nearly 20 years. Worked in every building scenario possible from new build to 300 year old listed country estates. This experience gives me a view of everything needed for an install. I price as follows. Fully tiled bathroom, everything replaced and new. 12 to 15 days thats including plastering, electrics, plumbing, tiling and a perfect finish. Ensuites 5-8 days Kitchens 12-15 days. Without knowing the particulars of your install i would say he has completely under estimated the level and amount of work needed. Unfortunately, unless contracts were signed you have no option but to either Cut your losses and get someone to finish. Wait for him to complete. Hopefully you did not pay in full upfront and can retain some money. I'm sorry you are having this issue, its something I hear all too much. I sincerely hope you get the matter resolved soon.

For me. Bathroom fitting for 30 years plus no excuses are good enough. If you can't turn up on time and dont turn up when you're expected then I'm sorry it's not good enough. I personally am not fitting unless completely isolated from clients.

Hi don’t make any payment until the job is completed. Get it in writing Seek advice from citizens advice Sounds like he is not a professional. Contact your trading standards officer Then small claims court if you have to Personally I wouldn’t have him back but take advice first Professional people start at 8
