Earthed steel conduit for ceiling cables less than 50mm depth?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.35 PM

Hello I have a small downstairs toilet, the ceiling is concrete with thin timber battens and upvc cladding. I want to install an extractor fan, if the mains cables are ran just underneath the upvc cladding am I correct in saying that I need to use earthed steel conduit or capping and the thickness of the steel isn't important as long as it's earthed? Would the steel conduit/capping not be needed if I was to use flexishield cable? Thanks very much 🚫 Couldn't see a reply button. 😳 🚫 Thanks Jon, much appreciated, that'll make it much easier. 🙂

Don’t need earthed mechanical protection if rcd protected

30mA RCD protected, not just any old RCD!

You can possibly extend the existing lighting circuit if it suitable. But you will need to give it 30mA circuit protection. As far as adding your extractor fan. That work, regardless of electric circuit is notifiable to local building authority.

no mechanical protection need in the ceiling, I would make sure it has RCD protection though.
