Damp Proofing

Wet dog smell under floorboards

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.35 PM

We've recently 'rescued' an old extension which had dirt built up over the damp proof course and air bricks blocked up. We knocked off the moldy plaster, used a dehumidifier, cleared the air bricks and removed all the dirt. There's now a wet dog type smell coming from the floor. Everything felt dry so we went ahead and laid our new flooring, which has improved the smell, but I can still smell this dank, musty, wet dog in one corner of the room. I'm wondering if the cavity wall insulation has become wet, but it's the floor that smells. Or if when we replaced the plumbing some old pipes were disturbed? Maybe it just needs more time to ventilate? I can just about hear the air flow under the floor so the air bricks are def clear. Will it go away? Should I get a damp expert in? Help!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

This problem can persist long after the area has been cleared/cleaned maybe 1/2years sadly patience is require it does sound though that you do have plenty of ventilation to the area so waiting time is required

You say everything felt dry but do you not realise it takes months/years for masonry to dry. I would have used a hygrometer before even considering laying a new floor.
