Smoothing and repainting a very uneven painted wooden surface
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.56 PM
I have a very uneven painted skirting board I would like to smooth .Its full of gouges which no amount of sanding removes so ~I am wondering whether using a suitable wood filler would do the trick ie a two part or ready mixed .Could someone please advise me ? Thanks

Hiya the short but sweet answer is a 2 pack filler mate, best brand I've found is tetrion powerfil, this comes with the hardener included, it dries in minutes in the right conditions, cutting down waiting time, so by the time you've filled where needed it will be ready to sand, apply 2 coats of primer, then finish off with the top coat of your choosing, hopes this helps all the best 👍

As above but i prefer the ronseal white one. They are all really 2 pack fillers that were developed for the car body work trade. So never any problems with adhesion, and with enough patience you would be surprised how great a finish you can achieve

the one draw back to using 2 pack filler is it’s difficult to use if u are not used to it do to adding harder and it going off very quick in turn its very hard to sand unless u use electric sander
me personaly would use toupret filler
sand the wood
paint with a water based primer
then fill what needs to ie applying a new film of filler over the whole area then lightly sand
re paint with primer
then u will prob need another top up fill
painting it in between fills with primer will highlight what needs filler and where
