RCD tripping and my investigations give no results
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.56 PM
Hi. We have a RCD tripping problem, tried unplugging devices, disconnecting shed and outside socket. Leaving certain lights off nothing helps. It is so random as well. Sometimes it trips during day sometimes in the middle of the night sometimes when we are away. Started in end of August but was rare and as it was our newly bought house (not new build) we thought it something to do with our appliances. No is happening even 3 times a day but will still have a day without occurrence. I have run out of the ideas and it is a pain.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Reading your message you will need a electrician who can test and fault find. Depending if they find it early or it can take up to an hour or more.
A good electrician will know where to start or you can get some who’s there just for the money and take the p***.
I had a fault on a downstairs lights and they was not working at all only upstairs and it was not letting the trip to reset on consumer unit. My electrician found that it was indicating a fault on the earth and neutral and found it with in the hour.

Nuisance tripping is always a big problem, especially if you have tried everything that you have said. Do you know which circuit it is affecting? Maybe it is water ingress into a connection and sometimes (very rare) a rodent is attached to a cable that it has bitten - I have seen that. Best to employ an electrician who can first check that the RCD is working correctly and then carry out an Insulation resistance (IR) test on the circuit that is causing the problem - with all appliances disconnected on that circuit. good luck!

Randomly tripping RCDs are one of the most challenging faults to find and rectify. Claims that it can be found and fixed in an hour or two are somewhat optimistic. It could take days. The only way to find the cause is thorough and painstaking testing. I hope you manage to find someone with the knowledge and experience that will be required.

Good test electrician should find it within a couple of hours. Fixing it will depend on what they find.

Go for a knowledgeable and honest electrician, you could end up spending alot on wasted time otherwise.
Below is good reference for choosing electricians and understanding what they should have for each type of work.
