Electrical

Power to a detached garage

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.56 PM

Hello, I have a garage with a driveway, which is about 60m away from my house and have a neighbour in between. I would like to install an electric charging point near the garage and have electricity installed inside of the garade (socket and lights). What options do i have to get power supplied to my garage? I have spoken to the neighbour and he wouldn't mind if i dig the ground behind this garden and put cables to my garage. However i'm not sure how can i do it legally and safely and also whether the electric charger can be installed that far away from the house. The other option i thought is to have a dedicated meter and fuse box in the garage. Any thoughts and advise?

Don’t run power across anyone’s land but your own. Very complex legal issues to overcome. Be cheaper to get your DNO to quote a new supply to the garage probably

It is possible to have electricity supplied to your garage, and you can have an EV charger installed there, its just a matter of correctly designing it. A professional electrician would be able to do it but its not a job for DIY. You can still get a government grant for an EV charger, which is currently 75% of the total cost capped at £350. However, the installer must be OLEV approved for you to qualify to get the grant. Shared use of land may require a Wayleave for permission to lay the cable through the part owned by your neighbour.

Totally agree with Jon. There is also alot of checks and paperwork for the charger to take into account. Pick your car and speak to the dealer, they will have a list of installers that can talk you through it.
