How to fit skirting board covers with carpets?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.56 PM

We've moved into a 1890's Victorian terrace with the original bullnose skirting. It has had lots of holes filled with caulk and doesn't look smart at all! We've looked at taking off the original skirts, but it will cause a lot of wall damage, and also damage the new carpets we've had fitted. We're looking at the moment at getting skirting board covers, however, we're wondering how these fit in a room with carpets already laid down. Do they sit on top of the carpet? If so, how would we replace the carpet if needed to in a few years? If not, would we need to take up the carpet completely? Thanks!

The carpet should have gripper rods round the edge of the room. These are normally fitted about 25mm in from the skirting. So as long as this is the case the carpet can still be removed! Failing that , the carpet could always be cut along the edge of the new covers. Hope this helps!!

Hello, as mentioned above, the carpet should have grippers, in which case the carpet could be remove and refitted, maybe with minor modification. But, in my honest opinion, with it being an old house and that being an original feature, i would recommend an expert come in, remove the carpet and restore the skirting where possible. This is not only going to keep the skirting original but also holds on to a small piece of history rather than covering up what is there. Also, you mention damage to the existing walls may occur, any competent professional in this field or specialist should be able to repair the damage that may occur to the walls in the process. It really depends how far you want to go with keeping it original. hope this helps.

You should always do it right you should have removed the skirting and replaced it with deeper skirting before you fit a new carpet trying to make good now will only cause you problems later down the line
