Occasional unpleasant smell in bathroom

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.56 PM

From time to time I get an unpleasant smell in the bathroom - a sort of acrid garlicky smell. I suspect the source is my neighbour's kitchen but could it be a problem with my waste pipe? The bathroom is at the back of the terraced cottage on the first floor and the neighbour's kitchen is at the back on the ground floor. I don't know if they have an extractor fan - just an outlet for the water heater. There is no odour in the back alley. I don't get on with next door, so not sure how to broach the subject with them. What can I do?

This is a tricky one. My first port of call is to put any grudges away and ask your neighbour down stairs in a polite way to see if she has the same problem. My second port of call is suggest if she thinks it may be the drains and if this this is the case then perhaps the two of you can have this looked at. I would phone the council and ask them if they could send down some drainage experts to have a look at the drains or if they could put a camera down there. I may also get a plumber in to check the pipe work and bends under the bathroom and sink. Perhaps something is stuck inside the pipe work. Good luck

Are your drains vented if not that’s where your problem will be

I think the initial response should have been to arrange a visit to investigate the problem first, before potentially coursing a conflict between neighbours..

The answers are good ones but need to be put in the proper order, firstly check their own wastes and traps, then check the gulley or manhole they discharge into for a blockage, this may be the result of a block drain, in which case look for a local approved drain clearance company
