Can it be done. Can a modern roof be fitted to my 1930s house

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.37 PM

I am a mid terrace house with what is believed to be featherboard. 1. Do the featherboards need to be removed. 2. If so is it possible to have the boards removed on a mid terrace without affecting the houses either side of me. How would it work. 3. Do the board provide structural support to the roof ? Is it ok to have them removed, and modern techniques used instead.

1 they need to be removed to allow air flow to the felt & top of the trusses when you felt over this type of roof all you are doing is puncturing the new felt you have put on , then trapping any moisture between the felt and the feather board causing your nails to rust fail a lot quicker than would normally happen did one lately where they had feather boarded a section of the roof about ten yrs ago the lathe nails had rotted completely and where no longer able to hold the battens in place causing the roof to fail while the main roof that had not been touched in over 100yrs was still structurally sound as they will be attached on every truss the can be cut and removed without effecting your neighbours property generally they where used as support to help with wind up lift your roof battens which are more sturdy these days will do they same it may only be an issue is its a conservation are or is listed in which case you may not have a choice and have to replace them if damaged or rotted your local building control officer will be more helpful on this good luck Alex

You can counter batten on top of the feather board. This will increase the high slightly outside. But this can be done
