Using screws to connect downpipes and swan neck

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.38 PM

Hi, We've recently had a roofer use wood screws to connect both the swan neck to the downpipe and other downpipes together. There are 3 used to hold the swan neck and two for the downpipe. Is this common practice to use screws? As I'm conscious that debris will accumulate around these areas and leaks and cracks will form? Thank you in advance Martin

Hi Its a practice that is used by many contractors to keep the down pipe from slipping so long as the screws are less than 30mm it should not really pose a problem

If you use smaller screws it would be fine but not long screws it will block the downpipe and swans i would use a strong mastic or sealant

If you cut it all really tight you don’t need screws or sealant adhesives to be honest. But that is very tricky and something I know a lot of people struggle to do my self included, screwing the down pipe together is fine providing you use a smaller screw, using a sealant is fine too personally I use screws as then if you need to clear a blockage it is much easier as you take the swan neck apart. It is a common solution but you are better fixing the bracket with adhesive on it has been cut to the correct length
