Standing water in crawl space

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.38 PM

Hi all, I'm not sure how to approach this. I have got standing water under my timber joists. It looks to be 2-3 inches deep, a couple foot wide, and probably 5Ft below the joists, in it's own little well. It's located here [ https://i.imgur.com/waeWi2P.jpg ] in my house. This is the only place the water is, it's also the only place where the crawl space is larger than 2-3 Ft deep- loos like the rest has been filled in with building materials/rubble at some point. I've got no access to the kitchen sub floor currently so I've not been able to check this area. It's been there since I moved in 2 years ago. Here's [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBv_Jb6QD_Q ] the best shot of the water I can get without taking up more floorboards. And here's [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2mo7Wemhx4 ] a shot of the condition of the timber directly above the water. Since moisture under the floor is only going to lead to problems, what's the best course of action for this? Do I contact United Utilities (I'm in Bolton) and see if they can test the water to find the source? Do I get the advice of a plumber or builder, or does it depend on the source of the water? Since there doesn't look to be any damage to the wood do I just leave it alone? Perhaps even filling the hole in with soil could be an option? Really not sure where to start on this and any advice on what to do would be amazing.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

So you say it has been there since you moved in has it got worse? If not why not try to remove the water perhaps syphon or pump out and see if it reappears This would give you a better idea of what is happening

Hi Dig a hole the same depth or deeper quite near the house (not right beside it). If this fills up, then it's the water table. Nothing you can do, just fill the deep patch under the floor. Perhaps lay a waterproof membrane on top to stop evaporation. If not, then you have a leak. Turn off all taps in the house, and check if any movement on the meter. If no movement, it may be foul water, in which case you'll need a test from the water board.
