Oil or Water-based stain block primer

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.37 PM

Hi there, Recently painted my bedroom. (old Victorian house - not new walls) with Matt Emulsion. We sanded back a old spot of wall damp and used a stabiliser and then painted over. Whilst the paint has gone on fine, which leads me to believe that there is no damp problem no more, the patch looks darker and sort of stained. My neighbour has offered me a couple of products to sort this out 1) Zinsser Bin (oil based) and/ or Crown Trade PSB stain block primer (water based) I'm 100% certain that the damp has gone as it was from a leak on the roof dripping down the wall. My question is which product would you use to block/ prime the patch so I can cover then paint over with Matt Emulsion? I want to use Zinsser as I know it's really good but I'm concerned as it's oils based and it could cause problems with the water based Matt Emulsion going on top? Any advice appreciated Thanks Graeme

Use the Zinsser, it's perfect with the emulsion and quick drying, use an old brush because it won't wash out with white sprit

Any rype of water stain, once dry can be painted over with white oil based gloss. Leave to dry then emulsion over. 👍

Zinsser BIN isn't oil based, it's a shellac primer with meths as a solvent. It's perfect for what you re doing as long as the damp has been cured.

Zinsser best product on the market but advice to rub down wall , make clean and dust free before applied 2 coats in zinsser, after you can apply emulsion paint of your choice
