Should boiler pressure still drop slightly after leak fixed 2 weeks ago?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.17 PM

Hi 2 weeks ago we had a leak coming through the ceiling of our downstairs neighbour. An emergency plumber was called and the floor boards ripped up and the leaking pipe located and fixed. The boiler was topped up to 1.5 bar. Just over 2 weeks later the pressure has dropped slightly to around 1.3 bar. Is this to be expected or is it worth having the pipe checked again before we have our laminate flooring put back down? Thanks Michael

Hello, its better to check the pipes again before you put the laminate flooring down to make sure u dont have to open again the laminate flooring, after the pipes are checked and no leaking founded you have to bleed all the radiators and top up the pressure again and if still going down u have problem with the boiler.

Hi Michael, Check the boiler for leaks if you have a combi boiler, check the heat exchanger for leaks and the radiators as well and the pressure relief valve (PRV) Pressure drops that minute aren't usually that serious but its always could to side with caution. If you want to know how to check the heat exchanger, or PRV there are plenty of videos on YouTube and its super easy, best of luck!

Suppose it is better to get repair checked However if the radiators were not bleed completely this could be a reason Top up pressure and check again in a few days

Certainly check the repair is free of leaks but take a pressure reading daily when the boiler is at the same operating temperature (central heating cold or fully warmed). The pressure gauge will not be very accurate however the reading can vary by up to 0.5bar from cold to full operating temperature. If you have a leak somewhere this will show up over a week or so on the pressure gauge. If the pressure drops by 0.5 bar at the temperature you have been checking at, look for leaks on the visible central heating pipes, valves and radiators. Also check the boiler pressure outlet for drips. This is normally a copper pipe on an outside wall behind the boiler. Don't confuse this with the condensate discharge pipe which is normally plastic and will drip water when the boiler operates.
