Can I run 6mm cable under my carpet.
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.17 PM
Hello - would appreciate any advice you can offer. I was advised to run a 6mm cable from kitchen to the fuse box; ready for the electrician to connect it the fuse box and connect the induction hob. I've tried lifting the floor boards but not succeeding and they keep splitting. I was wondering if I could 1. run it straight to the fuse box between the boards and underlay or 2. run it round the edge of the room tucked in next to the carpet grips. Many thanks in advance

Sorry to say but neither, you require a professional to do this as if you run it the way you want-no spark would connect it if was run this way, if you were lucky enough to get one to ‘sign it off’ usually we design, install and test our own work.

It is most unusual to expect a customer to install the cable. Surely the electrician would be tasked with this? Doesn't sound right what you are claiming. In any event, cables need to be correctly installed and there are no short cuts to doing that properly. So, no, you cannot install 230V cables under a carpet or around the gap in carpet grippers under skirting boards.

It’s certainly a no for both options. There is no chance an electrician would sign off this work. If you can’t get the flooring up then your best option would be to run the cable in trunking around the room to the fuse box.

The cable needs to be installed correctly and running it under the carpet is not the right way. No electrician will sign this off and customers should not be installing their own cable. Leave these things to the professionals.
