Front garden leveling and putting type 1 stones
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.17 PM
Hi Experts, Thank you for your help in advance. My driveway is tarmac and running parallel to lawn. I wanted dig lawn, put type1 stones and later pave/resin whole area including existing drive tarmac way. My doubts are. 1. For lawn upto what level it has to be dig out? Considering 5cm stone base to be built. 5 cm deeper than existing tarmac surfaces? 2. Do I need to remove existing tarmac or that will serve a subbase for paving/resin? So lawn area stone sub-base can be leveled at same like tarmac?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you are having resin the grass area would need to be dug out 155 below existing finish tarmac level . This will allow for 100mm of type one stone 55mm of 20mm dense base course tarmac . This will bring your new sub base up to the same level as your existing driveway . As long as your existing surface is not perished and is still in good order a simple clean and sweep would be need then it ready to apply the resin over the old and the new area.
One thing to note , if the original tarmac surface sub base is only 50mm then As long as the ground when you dig the grass area is stable and the client agreed to use it as it is a cost saving, then the original tarmac area would ok to use but I would still apply 100mm of Type1 to the new area to guarantee my work.
If you was to pave the area, the old Driveway and new area would need to be dug out 190mm below finish surface level to allow for
100mm type 1 stone
30mm of sharp sand screed
60mm blocked paver
So if you want to create extra parking area with type one temporally then you excavate the new area do the depth explained above depending on which finish surface you are having . You may need to apply a little more stone just to ramp the are where you drive into from existing finished surface.

To lay resin drive you need a solid base, the resin is only 16mm thick ,before laying resin where your grass is you need to dig out to solid sub base and put type 1 stone at 4" depth or whatever depth needed and then either tarmac or concrete up to the level of the existing tarmac drive ,and then you can resin all the drive with 16mm resin ,so basically you have to make sure that all the area for laying resin is same level with either tarmac or concrete
