Insulation over a lath and plaster ceiling
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.17 PM
Hello, We want to put insulation under the floorboards of our first floor bedroom to keep it a bit warmer and reduce the noise to downstairs. The ceiling below the bedroom is lath and plaster. Can it take the weight of insulation or would we need to attach it to the joists somehow? Is this a terrible idea? I’m reluctant to take the ceiling down and replace it as it looks fine, no cracks or anything. Actually.. thinking about it.. perhaps it’s already been boarded over the top. Grateful for any advice! Thanks

Hi,
as the laths are nailed to the underside of the joists if the ceiling is in good condition, which it sounds as though it is, you should be able to lay some lightweight Crown wool (or similar) insulation quit in the floor void without needing to support it to the joists themselves. You will need to be careful when lifting the floorboards as any undue vibration or banging could loosen the lath / plaster also don't pack the insulation in the void to tightly so as to put pressure on the ceiling when floorboards are relayed. Again better to screw the floorboards back done rather than nail but make sure you mark out where any cables or pipework is a don't use an impact power tool
