Would removing plaster from my chimney breast cause the neighbours wall to crack?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.17 PM

Hi, looking for some advice if anyone can help. I'm currently taking my chimney breast down to the bare brick and it's on a wall I share with a neighbour. They came round today and said the work I'm doing has caused the plaster to crack on their wall next to their chimney breast and they want me to get a plasterer and pay for it to be replastered and then have it redecorated the same colour as it was. I will absolutely do this but I'm wondering how my taking the plaster off my chimney breast wall has caused the wall next to it to crack on the other side, their wall, but not mine? I've been using a hammer and chisel to remove the plaster, not a power tool so there's been no vibrations. Many thanks!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Not sure but I have taken down a lot of chimney and never cause any damage you can damage next door wall if you hit the brick face on it is not worth taking them jobs on your self you must know what you are doing sorry but I think you will have to pay for next doors damage hope that will help

Its unlikely you have caused their crack but it is possible if its a single wall and a brick is loose that you have been chiselling and it has moved and pushed thir plaster out.

It could be pattentially when knocking but also their plaster could be weak to and as a result may show signs of airline cracks but they show now if you were taking the brick down to this could cause cracks does not warrant that full repair

Hi You should have got a party wall agreement, and if the chimney breast or stack is still there you should have above where you have taken the chimney breast out a rsj should have been put in with calculations done by a Structral engineer, and then building control involvement to see that it has been done properly, and you are responsible for your neighbors wall
