Squeaky bouncy floor by bedroom doorway
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.16 PM
We have moved into a new house and have noticed that a section of the floor by the threshold of one of the bedrooms is uneven, and is bouncy and squeaky when stood on (the area is probably around 15cm). We have checked the ceiling below but can't see any issues and nowhere else upstairs appears to be affected to the same extent. It's carpeted over so without removing the whole carpet there's no way we can check what the issue is. Is this likely to be a structural problem? The house was built in the mid 1990s.

Most likely a plumber has been under there and chopped out something without reinforcing/supporting the flooring properly to go back. Squeeking can be boards rubbing on each other but is more often a board moving against a nail which used to hold the floor down tight. Easy job for any competent handyman or DIY to resolve with a bit of timber and some screws.

Boards can be squeaky without the issue being structural but if the floor is bouncy it sounds like the boards are unsupported in that area. I recommend removing the carpet to investigate.

Unluckily to be. More then likely floorboards are not fixed probably.
