Joist Wall Plate Fixings

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.16 PM

I wonder if anyone can help me? Our building inspector has highlighted a potential issue with our new extension. The wall plate that runs along the existing masonry wall has been bolted using m10 x 100mm thunderbolts at 800 centres. He is concerned that the bolts are too short and that they should be at 400 centres. Do you think these bolts and centres are ok? Edit* The wall plate is 8x2 and spans around 6m

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would agree with your building inspector here, I imagine you’ve used 6x2 or 8x2 for your wall plate which means that there’s probably only about 50/55mm of the bolt in the wall which isn’t all that much. Hope this helps

The thunderbolts need to be 130mm length to fix the wall plate as you have a 10mm bed of mortar also, fixings at 400mm centres.Hope this helps.Bob Quaye Carpenter and Joiner.

Just thinking about it I would go back to the building inspector and ask him if you can get the builder to use 150mm bolts @ 400 centres but to make sure that when fixing the bolts that the holes needed must not be drilled in a straight line but an inch up and a inch down so that you don’t split the timber. Hopefully the inspector will agree.
