Potential chrysotile asbestos in my aretx ceiling

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.16 PM

Hey all, I took down part of an artex ceiling in one the upstairs rooms of my house. Its an old build, pre 80s so the artex is most likely to contain asbestos. (ive sent off a sample for testing anyway). There are just some things I'm worrying about for my own safety, if anyone is able to answer that would be very helpful. I had a brief exposure 20/30 minutes with no face mask, how harmful was this for me? I took a shower after and washed my clothes and hoovered the carpet. My bedroom is next door but the room I was working in was shut, would the air fibres travel throughout my house into other rooms easily, if so how long would they take to settle. What should I do to get rid of the asbestos fibres in the room and house? Any other potential help in what to do in my situation with half the ceilings artex being ripped off? After it settles is it safe to use the room or do I need to get it sorted? thanks very much all who reply.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

There is roughly a 50% chance of asbestos content pre year 2000. Even then, there is a miniscule amount present if positive. The door being shut vastly reduces spread of dust throughout your house. Artex is very dense so settlement is relatively fast. The best thing to do now is just vacuum as usual and obviously dispose and clean vacuum bags outside your house. If there is any dust on your furniture, wipe off with a damp cloth and dispose. Don't worry about it as by experience, your probable exposure is relatively minimal. Hope this helps. Its not a better answer, its a different one , basically asbestos in artex is roughly 4%, usually it not a good idea to scrape any type of artex , I honestly think you will be fine , I've took an advanced asbestos course ,so pretty clued up on asbestos in artex , just open all windows air the room out ,which I suspect you all ready have , hope this helps, kindest regards Jason
