Front Door sealant

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.16 PM

The sealant on the inside of our UPVC front door is peeling where it meets the wall. We are currently redecorating, and were wondering what is the best way to deal with this. We thought about trimming the peeling sealant back to the frame, and then reapplying the sealant - but do we put new sealant into the bare plaster and then paint - or paint first then sealant Thankyou for any advice

Bare plaster sucks moisture at any given opportunity. My advice would be to strip all old sealant using a stanley knife unless you have the required tool. Mist coat the plaster first, this will then help the sealant adhere to the wall. If this isn’t possible a second option would be to spray the area you want to seal first with water and then apply sealant

I would take it off and start again rub it down then repaint then reseal. You will get a better finish.

Firstly remove old silicone with a silicone remover . It is down to the individual as to re-silicone or trim this depending on how much movement is in the door frame. If using just silicone be very careful not to put to much in the gap as excess is difficult to remove. Always spray washing up liquid mixed with water over silicone when removing excess silicone. Hope this helps mikey beach.

Remove the silicone with a Stanley name or silicone remover, clean the area with a damp cloth, when dry enough apply paint, when paint is dry apply silicone being careful not to apply to much as its easy to get everywhere but hard to get off.

Silicone last - paint won't go over it so if you try you'll end up with a bit of a scruffy looking finish.
