Replacing a wood framed conservatory.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.16 PM

Hi we are moving into a house that has a wooden framed conservatory some of the wood is rotting. It was built in 2004 and the current owners did get planning permission for it. I have been reading that planning permission is no longer required for a conservatory. Can a old wooden framed conservatory be simply replaced with a upvc conservatory if the size stays the same? Also we would like to add a radiator into the conservatory and connect it to the gas central heating (when we get it installed, as there currently is no gas central heating in the house) . Do we need permission to do this, or what sort of criteria does the conservatory have to meet in order to have a radiator that connect to the rest of the house? We are unsure whether to add a radiator to the current conservatory or wait until we replace the conservatory and then add one. We don't want to add one and then later down the line get it trouble for not meet regulations.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If replacing old for new there is no problem unless in a special area which is outlined in the governments planning portal. As you don't say what type of house it is you may be able to build a bigger one. If detached or terraced no father than 3 metres if detached up to 4 metres with no planning or building regs required. Regarding, the heating, although a lot of people do extend their homes central heating system into their conservatory it is not legal. Any heating is supposed to come from an independent source because of the potential excessive energy use.

For most I would agree but in my experience a radiator can be added but would need to be on a different zone having its own thermostat making it independent to control from the rest of the house
