Rubber roof small puddles
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.35 PM
Hi I’ve had my kitchen flat roof replaced with a rubber system. I’ve noticed that when it rains there are a few areas of small rain puddles on the roof, there eventually dry out of the weather stays dry. Is this normal? Thanks

The roof should have a fall on it via firings and with the rubber epdm should have been Over boarded in new ply.
Most flat roofs will hold a slight bit of water I wouldn’t be to concerned as the new rubber systems are brilliant.

All flat roofs regardless of type of system used should not have any pooling or puddling on a flat roof. All flat roofs weather they are new or replaced should be set on firing pieces of wood that gives a sufficient enough fall for the any water to run off into your gutter system. Also 95% of the time we reboard when we replace flat roofs so that the firing pieces of wood can be changed or checked for suitability. We’ve created at least 50x flat roofs in the last couple of years and not one has puddled or gathered water and I think honest roofing companies will agree with above. I agree that the rubber systems are good and water tight but any pooling will shorten the life span in that particular area of puddling and the last thing you want is to see a pool of water on your nice flat roof. It can’t be good for companies recommendations either when the neighbours see a flat roof with a pool or puddles of water on it. P.s that when over boarding you need to check the area for any sags or movement also check that the fall is set good on the firings underneath the boards, I think over boarding is a slight cheat and can compromise the quality of the finish.

I agree, the new systems are great as long as they are installed correctly.

Any flat roofing system GRP(Fibreglass), Firestone rubber roofing system, or even the old fashioned felt roofing system should have a slight fall into the gutter area.
If the client is replacing an existing flat roof them the substrade is usually damaged /damp/sagging in some places across the roof.
I would always replace the substrade with new materials and create a fall into gutter area which will eliminate pooling and look far more professional.
