Concrete floor: best way to lay flooring
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.35 PM
Hey everyone. New flat has concrete floor throughout - it's 3rd floor and the entire building was built in the 1970s . I want to lay carpet in some rooms and laminate tiles in others. For the laminate tiling, some people advised using the Royal Gold underlay, or the XPS Underlay insulation. For the carpet, people have said to try the Wickes P5 T&G Chipboard Flooring so the carpet can then be fitted on top of that. Any advice would be appreciated :)

depending on the floor condition i would recommend a 8mm-10mm foam underlay for the carpeted area's and use the 5mm Laminate Fibreboard ( green underlay boards ) for the laminated area, With the sub-floor been concrete, if uneven i would recommend getting a smoothing compound put down before hand to make sure the the levels are right before installing the laminate.

A good thick underlay in the carpeted areas should suffice.
Depending on the quality of the concrete areas where the laminate will be, a smoothing compound first would ensure a higher quality finish. Using duralay or fibreboards as the underlay would be advisable. Stay away from the foam and paper rubbish.
Alternatively, hire a professional and pay the correct amount rather than pay peanuts and get a monkey.

Get someone in to check the floors if you're not sure. I personally wouldn't go for thick underlay as it will give a bouncy effect when walking on it. If the floors are level you can go ahead with the laminate flooring. Get underlay that can be fitted under the laminate you choose. The packaging will advise you which underlay is compatible. If the floors are uneven you'll have to use a smoothing compound which is extra work.
