Soaking Chrome Shower Body in Limescale remover to remove casing
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.35 PM
Hi there, I need to replace a cartridge on an exposed thermostatic shower valve but after removing the fixing screw the casing appears stuck due to limescale build up. I believe I'll have to soak it in some limescale cleaner but fear it may damage the Chrome finish? Any tips on a limescale cleaner/natural solution that has worked in the past without damaging the Chrome would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks

Hello, Something you could try is to heat it up. Ideally a hot air gun for stripping paint or if you're casreful a blow torch. Whatever you use, try to move the heat source around it heating it up gradually and evenly. You will find that the limescale will just fasll off as you do this. Then, to remove the casing use gland pliers or stilson wrench but protect it from the metal teeth by covering the chrome with something thick like a chamois leather or hessian. Hope this helps :)

You can try soaking a cloth in white vinegar and wrap it around the affected item and use a strap wrench to undo it as this won’t damage the chrome
