Is it okay to cook whilst waiting for plaster on kitchen ceiling to dry?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.34 PM
The contractor is taking 2 weeks between each appointment whilst doing our kitchen repairs after an escape of water insurance claim. I understand the plaster needs to dry but, is it okay to cook whilst the ceiling is drying? Also, if cooking is okay, how long can the plaster be left to dry before painting? I’m worried grease may get stuck to the ceiling and cause problems after painting.

Hi
It's fine to go about normal everyday activities, and the plaster will be fine to paint over in 7 days, but it will require a sealer coat of watered down emulsion before you apply the normal top coats

If it is a complete plaster job, ie. not just a skim coat, you do need to give it weeks to dry properly although there are a few pint products that claim to work on drying out plaster.
if you use an extractor hood tht should keep most of the grease from ending up on your ceiling but if you do get greasy deposits it may be more difficult getting pint to cover properly.

go for the proper plaster sealer before any paint is applied.

Hi, I would not cook unless you have been able to cover the wall with maybe tin foil. This will catch any of the grease as you will not want that on the plaster. If it does that will lead you needing to get sugar soap and having to scrub it off. It also may lead to cracking from the heat and steam off the cooker. Always put a miss coat on fresh plaster before painting your top coat by adding 70% water this will seal the plaster
