Who do i need to get out to investigate a crack in the mortar?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.34 PM
I have a crack in the mortar at the rear of the house, just above a first floor window (property is 25 years old - mid 90s). It spans 1 brick wide then zigzags down between 2 bricks then along a few bricks. What sort of tradesperson do i need to get out to confirm whether it is just a crack due to shrinkage or weathering, or if it is due to something more serious/structural?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would speak to a structural engineer and he will be able to advise if you if it is just shrinkage or weathering, or if you would require further investigation by having groundworks to dig trial holes and look at the foundations

Get a bricklayer around which a knowledgeable bricklayer will tell you there and then what it is and what course of action to take
Also keeps the customers costs down rather than send them through the roof

I’m guessing it’s a two story house, in which case you are talking about a brick quite close to the sofit. It could be something as simple as a badly placed wall tie or point loading from the sofit. I would recommend have a bricklayer out remove the damaged brick investigate the hole why it’s open and replace the brick. Cheapest option 1st. 2 hours work.
