Groundwork & Foundations

Checking for foundation integrity

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.34 PM

Hi all, I have a single storey extension that houses a bathroom. On the flat roof of this extension, I am thinking of building another extension or a balcony. However, I have been advised that I need to excavate an area next to the bathroom wall to establish as to whether the foundations of the single storey extension are strong enough to sustain a balcony or another extension. I am not keen of having the ground excavated so is there another way? Will removing the bath in the bathroom that is fixed against a wall expose the foundations of that wall? Cheers.

By removing the bath won’t provide any information as to the foundation. They will still need to expose the foundation.

No that will not reveal the foundations but you could break a hole in that room to have a look ?

Dig 2 simple holes on outside of building so structural engineer can advise on footing and calculate payloads to meet regulations required.
