Plastering & Rendering

Lime based internal plaster

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.55 PM

1930s detached house has recently had some render repairs carried out, approx 50% of the house and I believe although lime was used in the mix for this it was hydrated lime and used along with cement. Initially thought that the house had cavity walls but on further inspection it is only the rear extension that does and the walls that have been rendered in this way are solid brick. Some concerns now about the possibility of damp problems further down the line given lack of breathability of cement based renders. Two questions - 1) if damp issues do occur from cement based render, is there any typical time frame to when this starts happening and 2) to counter the issue, could it make sense to apply a purely lime based / breathable render on the internal walls so at least one side is breathable, rather than using standard gypsum?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

To put it in a nutshell , lime based morter on a non based cavity wall Will let damp through ..maybe a solution would be better to use a waterproof render on the outside walls to help damp penetration.

If there’s no damp now then no need to worry if sand and cement has perished then will need to be repaired either all knocked off then you could give it a damp course using the gel slurry a metre up on brick then scratch coat and top coat of render with additives or all the above slurry scratch coat then plasterboard on inside walls insulation board on outside wall no need to use lime based plaster as hydrated lime is put in to render to make mix better and draw some of the moisture in and colour for external render and similar for inside render but only use shovel full

1, it is likely to start in the winter 2,to stop damp coming through I would suggest that you use a normal cement render inside with an added waterproofer

You are 100% correct only lime should be used not cement, good on you for seeing the obvious, where most builders only know cement and don't realise the damage it causes, including making the walls freezing cold and damp
