Wood primer not drying
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.55 PM
I have had some new timber window frames installed and was recommended by the makers to sand them down, use two coats of wood primer and then one of top coat. I used “crown trade wood primer” yesterday after sanding down, and now 22 hours later it still feels tacky/sticky to touch. The tin said it had a dry touch time or 4-6 hours and after 16 hours for applying a coat over the top - so what have I done wrong? How can I fix it? And if it does eventually dry do I dare doing a second coat of this?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Surfaces would of been either wet or damp before or after application.
You only need one coat of primer not two.
Then undercoat then top coat.
Primer is just to seal the new wood

Could be that the timber was damp, or the primer/sealer wasn't shaken or mixed adequately enough to cure properly. Damp air can also cause paints to take longer to cure with extended flash times ect.

It sounds as though you've done it at the wrong time of year when the air is cold and damp. You might be best to leave it well alone until spring when it's warmer and then sand and repaint.

Wood primer should have been thinned out with white spirit so it soaks into the wood and it would of dried quicker then one or two underoats thinned out not to much just so it’spreads nice and even the a top coat even in this weather it would dry you seems to have put it on straight out of the can

when working with timber wood I apply the water base first coat , then it dries quickly, I sand the surface with 120 sandpaper and apply one coat undercoat and then the top color, you should quickly dry the inner layer. satinwood, egshell or gloss if it takes 6 to 8 hours to teach
