Putting plyboard over old flooring tiles, is this wise?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.55 PM
I have an upstairs bathroom which has a tiled floor. I have found that the tiles have been set on floorboards with no ply underneath and of course standing water on bathroom floor makes its way through. If I want to put down plyboard and lino, can I do this straight on top of old tiles or would they need to come up for ply to be attached to the floorboards? **update** just want to say thanks to all for the responses below, your time is very much appreciated.

I would not recommend you ply on top of the tiles your already have a issue with water getting though . The substrate is not safe remove tiles clean timber substrate allow to dry then install to recommend installation from your flooring contractor
Let’s make it clear do not use unibond it must acrylic primer
Use Hardi backer glued and screwed 6 inch’s centres then use acrylic primer and then tiling can commerce using a good flexible adhesive and flexible grout

The old tiles need to come up for ply to be attached to the floor boards.
On the tiled side, it's a bit different because you can't screw any deeper than first sheet of ply. You want to be staggering the top sheets so that you don't get 4 corners meeting together.

Best to strip it back to floor boards and lay hardibacker or weidiboard subfloor 1st as they are both waterproof then tile

Why is everyone saying rip everything up when you are putting lino down? If you were re tiling it then yes rip it up and start again. Unless tiles are loose, just put lino over the top! Self level it first if you want. Or am I reading this wrong?
