Plastering over bonding

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.54 PM

Hi, I’m tiling my bathroom and my friend who’s a plasterer did a bonding coat and said to pva it and then tile onto should be fine. I’ve read loads that makes me think it won’t be okay to do this? Anyway I bought some ready mixed plaster to do a skim coat myself on the bonded wall, do I need to pva it before I put the plaster on?? It’s been a week since the bonding coat was applied... Not arsed about what it looks like just need it to be strong for the tiling. Thanks in advance

Tiling on bonding is normal practise. Dont even try to plaster if you havent done it before. Why do you want a plaster finish to tile on to?

The pva is a primer. It will stop the plaster going of to quick by stopping the moisture escape to quickly. If you do not prime there would be a high risk of the plaster falling of.

The suction on bonding coat especially if done a while ago can be very strong I’d suggest a good pva coat one plaster coat and flatten and then sponge giving you a decent suction for tile adhesive And a god strong key at the same time

Tilers won't tile on bonding, they will want a finish coat applied over the top. PVA won't be strong enough to hold the weight of plaster and tiles, you will need to apply a pregrit first, not pva.

Dont tile on bonding. Tile adhesive doesn't stick to it. Any tiler would tell you that. Get it skimmed.
