Is Duralay underlay good quality?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.37 PM
I'm laying laminate flooring in the hall, lounge/diner. The sub-floor is mostly floorboards, some of which are uneven so I'm putting 3mm hardboard down to even out the floor. I've just ordered Duralay Underlay from screwfix but now wondering if this is the best for the job? I've got a small area of concrete that I will be using self levelling compound on to bring up to level with hardboard too. Thanks

Depending on how uneven the floorboards are, you may need to go as thick as 9mm ply.
3mm hardboard is good over smooth flat chipboard but won't be enough to taken out floorboards.
Duralay is the best underlay for laminate in my opinion. Fibreboard next. The others are just rubbish, no better than paper.

9mm ply is certainly what I'd recommend in order for you to achieve a quality end result. Duralay is a quality underlay for sure, however there are many underlay options that either supersede or are on a par with it, not all are to be classed as rubbish.
